Imprisoned in France, Yael Black is disconnected from the world. She goes from her cell, to the tiny prison yard, and to the shower 3 times a week. She's surrounded by non-Jews, and not permitted to make phone calls.
In a handwritten letter, pictured above, she writes about her experiences. The tone is upbeat but between the lines, a horrifying reality emerges: Yael is imprisoned with almost no chance of being released, unless her father can raise enough money to get her out. To all the people I love, Today was a showering day, I've just got back into my cell. Showering in the morning is weird for me. I'm used to showering at night before I go to sleep. But almost everything here is different than what I'm used to - I'm slowly, slowly getting used to things. I don't know if I've told you, but here you can shower 3 times a week - I'm happy it doesn't come out on Shabbos, I don't think I could survive with only 2 showers a week. I still am not able to call and it's really frustrating. I'm waiting until tomorrow for Mrs. Dina to visit me, and then I can ask her advice about making video calls. Yesterday, the French girl told me it's her 6th time in jail. The previous times it was because she drove without a license. It sounds stupid not to get a license and sit in jail 6 times because of it. So what if you are 35! I'm really learning a lesson from that. The Brazilian girl that comes with us does not communicate at all. But she's here because she smuggled cocaine. Today it's pouring; I wonder if they will take us out into the yard. The yard is tiny. I walk in circles around myself. I'm waiting for your letters to hear what's going on with you.
Love you loads ♥️ Yael
