להלן מאמר תורני על חנוכה המבוסס אך ורק על מקורות תורניים אורתודוקסיים (תנ״ך, חז״ל, רמב״ם ומפרשים קלאסיים). בסוף מצורף תרגום מלא לאנגלית.

חנוכה – אור התורה כנגד חושך יוון

ימי החנוכה אינם רק זיכרון לניצחון צבאי, אלא בראש ובראשונה גילוי מחודש של כוח התורה מול תרבות שביקשה לעקור אותה מן השורש. חז״ל לימדו שהמאבק עם יוון לא היה על הגוף בלבד, אלא על הנשמה, על קדושת החיים ועל משמעותם.

הרמב״ם (הלכות חנוכה ג׳:א׳) כותב שגזרו היוונים גזרות קשות על ישראל, "וביטלו דתם, ולא הניחו אותם לעסוק בתורה ובמצוות". כלומר, עיקר הגזירה הייתה ניתוק הקשר בין עם ישראל לבין התורה – מקור חייו.

טומאה מול קדושה

היוונים לא ביקשו להשמיד את עם ישראל, אלא "לטמא" את השמנים שבהיכל. טומאה אינה חוסר חומר, אלא חוסר קדושה. הם רצו אור – אך אור אנושי, שכלי, מנותק מהשכינה. כנגד זאת, מצאו החשמונאים פך אחד של שמן טהור, חתום בחותמו של כהן גדול – רמז למסירות נפש על טהרת התורה.

הנר הקטן שמאיר את הכול

חז״ל קבעו שמצוות חנוכה היא "נר איש וביתו" (שבת כ״א ע״ב). נר אחד קטן די בו כדי לגרש חושך רב. אין צורך בעוצמה חיצונית; די באמת אחת, טהורה, כדי להאיר עולם שלם. זהו כוח התורה – אמת אלוקית שאינה תלויה ברוב או בכוח.

אור שאין לו ביטול

נרות חנוכה שונים משאר נרות המקדש: אין משתמשים לאורם. האור אינו לצורך האדם, אלא עדות. "נר חנוכה – מצווה להניחה על פתח ביתו מבחוץ" כדי לפרסם את הנס, להראות שהאור האלוקי קיים גם בתוך החושך של הגלות.

חנוכה לדורות

חנוכה אינו חג של העבר בלבד. בכל דור יש "יוון" אחרת – תרבות שמפארת חכמה ללא יראה, אור ללא קדושה. והתגובה נשארת אותה תגובה: לימוד תורה, שמירת המצוות, והדלקת אור קטן, יום אחר יום, עד שהחושך נסוג.

כפי שאומר הנביא:

"כִּי נֵר מִצְוָה וְתוֹרָה אוֹר" (משלי ו׳:כ״ג)

English Translation

Chanukah – The Light of Torah Against the Darkness of Greece

The days of Chanukah are not merely a commemoration of a military victory, but first and foremost a renewed revelation of the power of Torah in the face of a culture that sought to uproot it entirely. Our Sages teach that the struggle with Greece was not over the body, but over the soul—over holiness and the meaning of life itself.

Maimonides writes (Laws of Chanukah 3:1) that the Greeks issued harsh decrees against Israel, abolishing their faith and preventing them from engaging in Torah and mitzvot. The core of the oppression was the attempt to sever the bond between the Jewish people and the Torah, the source of their life.

Impurity Versus Holiness

The Greeks did not seek to destroy the Jewish people, but to defile the oil in the Temple. Impurity is not the absence of matter, but the absence of holiness. They desired light—human, intellectual light—detached from the Divine Presence. In response, the Hasmoneans found a single cruse of pure oil, sealed with the stamp of the High Priest, symbolizing self-sacrifice for the purity of Torah.

A Small Flame That Illuminates All

The Sages established that the mitzvah of Chanukah is "one candle per household" (Shabbat 21b). A single small flame is enough to dispel great darkness. No external power is needed; one pure truth can illuminate an entire world. This is the power of Torah—Divine truth that does not depend on majority or might.

A Light That Is Not for Use

Chanukah candles differ from the Temple lights: we may not use their illumination. The light is not for human benefit, but as testimony. The mitzvah is to place the candles at the entrance of the home, facing outward, to publicize the miracle and proclaim that Divine light exists even within the darkness of exile.

Chanukah for All Generations

Chanukah is not only a festival of the past. Every generation has its own "Greece"—a culture that glorifies wisdom without reverence, light without holiness. The response remains the same: Torah study, mitzvah observance, and lighting a small flame each day, until the darkness retreats.

As the verse states:

"For a mitzvah is a candle, and Torah is light" (Proverbs 6:23)

קֹדֶשׁ

החֹלֶם הוא נקודה עגולה, שלמה, כמו מעגל שאין לו התחלה ואין לו סוף. הוא מרמז על שלמות, שפע ורצון עליון – אהבה אלוקית שמקיפה את האדם מלמעלה, גם כשהוא עוד לא שלם.

הסֶגּוֹל מורכב משלוש נקודות – והוא מרמז על חיבור: מחשבה, דיבור ומעשה; גוף, נפש ונשמה; ישראל, תורה והקב״ה. זהו חיבור פנימי, אהבה שמגיעה מבפנים, דרך הבחירה והעבודה של האדם.

כאשר המילה קֹדֶשׁ כוללת גם חֹלֶם וגם סֶגּוֹל, היא מלמדת אותנו יסוד גדול:

הקדושה נוצרת כאשר יש חיבור בין
