"Rina!" 6-year-old Zehava skipped into the apartment and rushed into her sister's arms.
"My Morah said that I'm going to be Ima Shel Shabbat this week, and I need to bring a scarf to cover my hair like all Ima's do. But if you're my Ima, why don't you cover your hair, Rina?"
Rina sucked in her breath and tried to keep her voice stable, as she answered, "I'm not your Ima, Zehava. I'm your sister. Only Ima in the bedroom wears a scarf."
With the confidence of a 6-year-old, Zehava declared, "But you look after me and put me to bed, so you are my real Ima."
Planting her thumb into her little mouth, Zehava snuggled deeper into Rina's arms, caressing her cheek on the soft fabric of Rina's shirt.
Gazing at Zehava, Rina felt a surge of compassion towards her little sister. So young, growing up with no mother to care for her. But a stronger emotion came up next. Lucky Zehava. At least she has someone to call Ima. Rina longed to throw herself into someone's arms, but the last hug she had received was from her father, 5 long years ago.
======
Rina and Zehava are part of a tight-knit group of 8 siblings fiercely protective of each other. They have no other choice. When the youngest was just a baby, their father passed away suddenly. Their mother reacted by withdrawing into herself, completely neglecting her children.
Friends are working to save the children, however nothing can be done without funds. Donations are being collected on the family's crowdfunding page and will provide the children with food, clothing, and a safe and comfortable future.
Without immediate help, the children risk a future of severe neglect and dysfunction.
