Gila Miriam Ghermiza lay in her hospital bed, eyes on the clock. Still, 7 hours left until Motza Shabbos? Quickly berating herself for counting down until the end of this sacred day, she had to admit the truth: Shabbos was painful. A long lonely day with no grandchildren to cheer her up, and no husband to give his reassuring presence.
She allowed her mind to drift back to her healthy years. Her 9 children sitting around the table, big ones clearing plates and ladling soup, full family harmonious Zemirot. Her heart constricted in pain. She couldn't allow herself to think such sad thoughts on Shabbos.
Her inability to talk, sing, and make her famous Challos hurt her terribly. But the worst was the intense loneliness and separation from her family as she lay paralyzed in hospital.
The hospital where Mrs Ghermiza stayed is miles from her home - and too far for Shabbos visitors. While Gila Miriam is now home with her family, if they don't procure $10,000 per month for her medical equipment, she'll be moved back to the hospital for what could be a permanent stay.
The Ghermizas can no longer afford the costs of her breathing apparatus, as 8 years of care wiped them out financially and left them deeply in debt. In dire straights, they depend on the public to help sponsor the equipment that keeps her alive.
All donations go towards paying for breathing apparatus and installing a badly needed elevator into their home.
Get Gila Miriams' Tefilos - Out of Hakaras Hatov, Gila Miriam pledged to daven by Kivrei Tzadikim for those who donate $180 or more.
