EMILIO FLORES/CAL STATE LA News from the world of work America's best employers: Forbes' 2024 lists of the best midsize employers and the best large employers are out now—highlighting which companies have distinguished themselves for their ability to keep their employees happy and engaged. The annual rankings, conducted in partnership with market research firm Statista, are based on a survey of more than 170,000 U.S.-based workers at American companies. Survey respondents were asked to evaluate their employer based on a range of criteria, including work-life balance, compensation, gender pay equity, training programs, opportunities for career advancement, diversity and health benefits.  Remote workers are on the chopping block: The latest throttling of remote workers, revealed by a Live Data Technologies study and reported in the Wall Street Journal, found that remote workers were 35% more likely to have their jobs cut in 2023 than their in-office peers. The latest layoffs: Warner Music announced plans to cut 600 employees as the record label conglomerate looks to sell off its entertainment portfolio. And Amazon Health Services said it's cutting "a few hundred" workers from its One Medical chain and Amazon Pharmacy. A college double major could be a ticket to career security: The number of undergraduates pursuing more than one major is on the rise. A new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that over the long term, college graduates with two majors or a dual degree are 56% less likely to suffer significant disruptions to earnings—think pay cuts, furloughs, layoffs and long periods of unemployment—than those with a single college major.
