Clear as Day, Learn at Night

The blog post titled "4 Degrees of Joy" (4 דרגות של שמחה) from Torah Sparks presents a teaching by Yosef Shlomo Cohen regarding the stages of spiritual service (Avodat Hashem).

The central idea is that as a person ascends through these four stages, their level of joy increases. A person can move between these levels throughout their life or even within a single day.

The 4 Degrees of Service:

  1. Slave (Eved) – Acceptance of the Yoke:

    • Action: Serving God out of obligation and "Kabbalat Ol" (accepting the yoke). Doing what is right because it is the truth, even if the heart isn't fully connected.

    • Joy: Limited. It is the joy of being faithful and doing the right thing, but it carries a certain "heaviness."

  2. Minister/Officer (Sar) – Responsibility:

    • Action: Taking initiative, leading, and influencing the environment. There is order and a defined role.

    • Joy: Partial. Because the effort is often "half-hearted" (not giving the entire heart), the joy is greater than that of a slave but still limited.

  3. Son (Ben) – Closeness and Love:

    • Action: Serving out of a deep internal desire and a bond of love. The relationship is the primary motivator, not just the duty.

    • Joy: Broad and deep. Even during times of struggle, the joy remains because the "son remains a son," and the happiness stems from the relationship itself.

  4. Spouse (Bat Zug) – Complete Connection:

    • Action: Total partnership and a complete desire to please the Creator. Like a true marriage, there is no "half-effort"; it is characterized by total giving and deep listening.

    • Joy: Unlimited and absolute. This joy is not dependent on external factors; it is the joy of "Dveikut" (cleaving to God) and true union.

Summary: The teaching emphasizes that while every stage is authentic and important, the goal is to strive for higher levels of connection, moving from a "limited" joy to a "limitless" one through a deeper relationship with the Divine.
